As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting emerging talent, The Star Sydney is providing platforms for local musicians to showcase their talents to key industry players and win often out-of-reach studio time.
The Star Sydney is proud to be supporting up-and-coming musicians in the local Sydney scene, providing a platform for them to showcase their talents in front of industry professionals and win pricey studio time through competitions like Rock Lily’s Battle of The Bands and Sports Bar’s Free Throw Rap Battle.
Held at Rock Lily across four weeks in early 2023, the Battle of the Bands drew crowds of diehard music fans who came along to cheer their favourite local music acts. On the line was the chance to win $4,500 of studio time – including mixing and mastering – at Studio 301, one of Australia’s most iconic music studios where the likes of Amy Shark, Tash Sultana, Jimmy Barnes and The Chainsmokers have recorded.
Rock’n’soul band The Polymics emerged victorious, impressing the panel of industry judges including Poppy Reid (Editor in Chief of Rolling Stone Australia), Alexander “Captain” Franco (Senior Director of A&R at Sony Music and Artist Manager), and Sydney alt-rap group Triple One.
For The Polymics, winning Battle of the Bands was a moment they’ll never forget.
“The opportunity to play for such substantial judges was a dream come true for all of us. We had the time of our lives competing, so much so that our vocalist Bella called it the best night of her life!”
In the lead up to the NBA Finals, The Star Sydney is getting ready to welcome back music fans once again with the Free Throw Rap Battle in Sports Bar – a collaboration with Western Sydney hip hop collective The Area Movement and Hennessy, the NBA’s official Spirits Partner.
In the search for Sydney’s next rap superstar, eighteen emerging rappers will compete in several heats, going head-to-head spitting their fiercest bars and rhymes. The Area Movement’s curated line up of DJs including Klasik and Talisha will pump up the crowds during the heats, with TikTok DJ sensation Mistah Cee hitting the decks during the final round on June 10.
Lionel Nogueiro, Label Manager at The Area Movement, knows how crucial opportunities like the Free Throw Rap Battle are for emerging artists.
“Chances for new artists to get onstage and show off their talent are few and far between, but so important for them to get their foot in the door. We’re so excited to be partnering with The Star – one of Sydney’s best entertainment precincts – to be providing a platform for these amateur rappers to take the stage next to some of our favourite existing local acts.”
Rappers can submit their expressions of interest to compete in the Free Throw Rap Battle until May 29 via The Star Sydney’s website.
